Payments leader Stripe has finalized a deal to buy software gateway startup OpenRouter, according to a recent report published by Bloomberg. OpenRouter runs a unified platform that lets developers route tasks across different machine learning systems based on speed requirements, performance benchmarks, and budget limits.
This mega deal values the software routing startup at over $7 billion. The move highlights how fast valuation numbers are surging across the developer ecosystem. Back in May, OpenRouter raised $113 million during a Series B investment round that valued the company at $1.3 billion. Major venture capital players backed that funding round, including Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet corporate investment arm Capital G.
During that spring funding round, OpenRouter chief executive officer Alex Atallah described his product as the direct equivalent of Stripe for artificial intelligence tools. He explained that the platform provides software builders with a single access point to connect with hundreds of competing models, effectively stopping vendor lock-in before it starts. The startup currently serves 8 million global users and provides instant API access to more than 400 distinct language models through one unified dashboard.
Reports about a potential deal first surfaced last month when The Wall Street Journal revealed that executives from both companies were holding early acquisition talks. Bloomberg confirmed those initial discussions led directly to a formal agreement valued at well over $7 billion. When reached for an official statement regarding the report, a Stripe spokesperson declined to comment on market rumors or speculative news.
By bringing OpenRouter directly into its corporate ecosystem, Stripe positions itself at the very center of software routing and developer billing. Modern software teams frequently switch between different intelligence providers to optimize daily operating costs, and managing those software connections requires reliable billing pipelines. Stripe core strength rests in processing digital transactions, subscription fees, and developer API usages. Owning the primary gateway that routes requests across hundreds of competing software models gives Stripe total control over high-volume developer billing streams.
This acquisition also signals a major shift in how tech giants build out developer platforms. Rather than spending billions to train individual foundation models from scratch, Stripe is choosing to control the underlying infrastructure layer that connects developers to every major model on the market. As software companies continue testing new automation tools, managing model access, controlling API costs, and handling automated micro-payments will remain critical business requirements. Controlling the routing pipeline allows Stripe to monetize millions of developer requests regardless of which specific AI model wins the broader technology race.
