Booking Monopoly: Instinct Founder Claims Personal Agents Dominating Online Travel

Personal agent platform Instinct sees over half of its overall transaction volume coming directly from travel bookings, according to founder Noah Shinn during a recent podcast interview. The invite-only assistant platform handles flight purchases, hotel reservations, and local transportation directly through messaging interfaces like SMS, iMessage, and WhatsApp rather than forcing users into dedicated standalone applications.

In a wide-ranging discussion with investor Patrick O’Shaughnessy, Shinn revealed that the 14-member startup is approaching nearly $1 billion in annual transaction volume across its small, exclusive user base. Without giving away the exact mathematical formulas behind the estimate, Shinn emphasized that the system grows roughly 10% day over day, with total transaction volume keeping pace right alongside user expansion.

Instead of redirecting users to traditional online travel agencies or airline booking portals, Instinct processes reservations natively. The system unifies flight options, hotel chains, and local car services into a single conversational chat window, presenting curated travel choices directly to the user along with instant checkout options. Shinn argued that jumping between legacy travel sites, comparing flight tabs, and filling out repetitive passenger details creates massive user friction that personal software agents eliminate completely.

However, Shinn faced heavy public backlash for additional remarks regarding restaurant reservations and preferential treatment. He explained that Instinct periodically scrapes restaurant reservation sites to claim open dining slots, hinting that the startup aims to bypass standard first-come, first-served reservation systems. Industry observers quickly pointed out the flaws in that strategy, noting that software agents can easily misrepresent special occasions, lie about anniversary dates, or cheat local dining queue rules just to land a table for their clients. Critics also emphasized that top restaurants naturally prefer local regulars over automated bots making false promises.

Despite the public controversy, venture capital firms continue pouring massive funding into the startup. Instinct recently closed a massive $1 billion Series C funding round led by Sequoia Capital, Benchmark Capital, and Coatue, launching the company’s market valuation to $10 billion in just over thirty days. The small team now competes directly against massive tech platforms like Meta’s Muse, Khosla-backed Walo, and OpenAI’s Dots in the rapidly growing market for personal software agents.

The rapid growth of transactional assistants signals a permanent shift in digital commerce operations. Traditional e-commerce relies heavily on website ad placements, search engine optimization, and direct app traffic to capture online buyers. When personal software agents handle flight bookings, table reservations, and ride requests on behalf of users, traditional ad-driven referral models fall apart.

As agent platforms consolidate distribution power, consumer brands must adapt their technical infrastructure to interface directly with automated software buyers. Instinct’s multi-billion-dollar valuation proves that direct, agent-led transaction channels are redefining how consumers interact with global travel brands.
