Google launched an experimental feature called Call for Me, allowing its Gemini assistant to contact local businesses directly on behalf of users. The feature initially targets Pixel 11 owners who hold paid Gemini Advanced subscriptions in the United States. Testers must run the beta build of Google’s Phone application on Android to try the tool, as Google tests conversational performance in limited trials.
Previous calling tools guided by artificial intelligence handled narrow tasks, but Call for Me grants the assistant broader operational freedom. With explicit user permission, the software shares personal details needed to complete specific errands during live phone calls. The assistant dials directly from the user’s personal cell phone number, ensuring calling records and caller ID data match the actual account holder.
Google designed the assistant to manage multi-step outbound calls without requiring constant manual guidance. Users can instruct Gemini to call local retail shops to check product stock, schedule dinner reservations, reschedule existing medical appointments, or hold for customer service representatives. The software dials the business, identifies itself as an automated assistant, navigates interactive phone menus, endures long hold times, and conducts natural dialogue with staff members on the other end.
Users keep complete oversight during every outbound call. The Phone app displays a live text transcript on the screen as the conversation proceeds in real time. If a business interaction requires personal input or complex decision-making, the user can tap the screen at any point to take over the phone call instantly.
This rollout builds on years of automated phone experimentation inside Google. Years ago, Google wowed tech audiences during an I/O keynote by showing Google Assistant booking a hair salon appointment over the phone, complete with natural speech pauses. Last year, Google expanded these efforts by rolling out Ask for Me, letting Gemini inquire about business pricing and service details. Pixel phone owners also gained access to Hold for Me, which waits on hold until a live human representative joins, alongside Direct My Call, which visualizes phone tree numbers directly on screen.
Google emphasizes that real-world phone calls contain complex nuances, varied accents, and unpredictable audio environments. Starting with a small test group allows engineers to refine conversational accuracy before expanding Call for Me to broader Android devices globally.
Handing everyday phone errands over to intelligent assistants removes a major source of daily friction for consumers. Spending twenty minutes on hold to adjust an appointment or calling multiple stores to find an item in stock wastes valuable personal time. As software agents become better at handling live voice interactions, delegating routine tasks directly to mobile software will transform how people manage local errands.
