Data Lockout: Reddit Kills RSS Feeds and Closes Public API to Block AI Scraping

Reddit announced sweeping platform changes that put an end to open RSS feed support and public API access, striking a heavy blow to supporters of the open web. Platform executives cited large-scale automated scraping and data abuse from artificial intelligence companies as the core reason for shutting down these traditional web tools. RSS feeds will stop functioning entirely on November 13, while public API access shuts down permanently in March 2027.

For decades, RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, provided internet users with an open standard to aggregate web updates inside personalized news readers without visiting individual homepages. Tech giants like Google once ran popular RSS platforms, though independent news readers like Feedly took over the space in recent years. Reddit acknowledged that RSS served as a beloved tool for its community, but insisted that automated web crawlers heavily exploited the feature to scrape forum discussions without permission.

The timing of this decision matches Reddit’s aggressive push to monetize user-generated forum conversations. Selling forum data to artificial intelligence companies for model training has quickly become a lucrative business unit for the platform. During its second quarter, Reddit reported a 24% year-over-year increase in non-advertising revenue, hitting $43 million. Closing public access points ensures that external software developers and research teams cannot collect Reddit data for free, forcing them to sign paid commercial licensing agreements instead.

Community moderators and third-party developers expressed immediate frustration regarding the upcoming shutdown. Many community leads rely on RSS alerts inside tools like Discord to manage forum workflows and post updates. While Reddit recommends migrating those setups to its official developer platform, community managers warn that losing RSS options disrupts daily operations and limits how users consume forum content.

The upcoming public API shutdown in March 2027 carries even wider consequences for research tools, social listening software, and independent applications. Academic researchers, market analysts, and external software products that rely on programmatic API access must establish direct commercial contracts with Reddit to continue retrieving forum data. Third-party bot developers must register their applications with Reddit before January 12, 2027, or lose API access entirely.

In addition to API restrictions, Reddit announced tighter security limits on its classic, text-heavy layout known as Old Reddit. The platform is adding safeguards to limit scraping, restricting account access for moderators and recent visitors while cutting logged-in user retention windows down to six months. Reddit explicitly framed these security updates as necessary steps to block automated traffic and secure its proprietary content.

Locking down open data channels highlights a dramatic shift across the social media ecosystem. As user discussions become valuable training assets for artificial intelligence companies, platforms are rapidly closing free public access to protect their commercial data deals. Reddit’s move signals the end of open web syndication across major social platforms, forcing third-party developers, researchers, and AI builders into paid commercial partnerships.
